4. Joli Rouge class plans
The classes on tuesdays are set up on an 8 week rotating basis. In any given consecutive 8 weeks, you basically get an Intro course in Arg. Tango. I will emphasize, this is ONLY AN INTRODUCTION, and to progress and grow in the dance requires continued study, regular practice, and social dancing.
The cirriculum is as follows:
wk 1 - The embrace, connection, walking, lead/follow technique
wk 2 - Disassociation, walking “outside”, navigating crossed system
wk 3 - Salida/ Resolution, ochos
wk 4 - La Crusada, and 8 count basic
wk 5 - Molinete/turns
wk 6 - Musicality & vals
wk 7 - “Milonga”, the dance
wk 8 - Close embrace
Check the calendar for when the dates for class #1
Please attend classes at the Joli Rouge until you can very confortably and confidently navigate the above movements. Learning new, more advanced movements, before mastering these basic elements is frustrating, as well as detrimental to the overall growth of the dancer and community.
Tango to Now
Zen and the Art of Argentine Tango
Enjoy the Here and Now experience of Tango via a journey of exploration and self-discovery. A unique Zen approach relaxes your mind-body so you can zero-in on your true center—the still point where the dance is. If you can walk you can dance the Tango—create intimate dances in the living moment and find the key to good relationships and the Dance of Life.
Tango to Now presents a series of workshops that take you deep into the exciting and challenging world of Argentine Tango. The Beginner workshop teaches you the basic vocabulary of the tango and how to use it to improvise dances that express your emotional connection to the music, your moving body and that of your partner. Its main goal is to give you an immediate sense of accomplishment and the self-confidence you need to attend local Milongas (tango dance parties). The Intermediate-Advanced workshop brings you deeper into the art of the tango—its musicality, dynamic range and flowing elegance. In addition to traditional skills and figures, you will learn dramatic sequences created by master teachers in Buenos Aires. These can be used for social dancing or for public presentations. They contain important elements that you will internalize and use to improvise your dances.
Both workshops are ongoing and open-ended. You can attend or not attend any session you wish. Each has clearly defined goals but adapts to learners at different levels. This enables you to choose your own path through the curriculum and make progress at your own pace.
Beginner Workshop —Every Wednesday 7:30 to 9:00 pm starting Sept 5 – 2007.
Prerequisites: None—but experience in yoga, martial arts or other dance forms is helpful. The curriculum includes breathing, posture, balance, connection, pivots, grapevine, ochos, the Basic 8, turns (giros), and simple adornments. No need to bring a partner—but helpful if you do.
Intermediate-Advanced Workshop—Every Thursday 7:30 to 9:00 pm starting Sept 6 – 2007.
Prerequisites: Graduation from the Beginner workshop—or equivalent tango experience. The curriculum includes the correct techniques for executing barridas, boleos, carpas, cambio-de-frente, colgadas, enrosques, espejos, ganchos, giro-adornos, lapiz, paradas, morditas, planeos, sacadas and volcadas. As an added bonus, you will be introduced to other tango styles such as the historic Canyengue, Milonga, Milonguero and Tango al Reves. No need to bring a partner—but helpful if you bring one who meets the prerequisites.
Cost--$8 for each walk-in workshop—less for prepaid blocks (e.g., $36 for block of six) Private classes (1-1/2 hr) are $25 each—less for prepaid blocks (e.g., $85 for block of four).
Location—Kenilworth Inn—60 Caledonia Rd. Asheville, NC. Park in back of Inn and use the rear patio entrance. Wear shoes with leather soles or equivalent for easy pivoting and to protect your knees. Please—no perfumes for the sake of the chemically sensitive.
